So if you know phone number of a someone using fr and this utility, you can easily receive info about his location?
Well i\'m not a paranoid but imo it will be clever to add at least basic autentification mechanism to this tool. For example you have to send sms containing password like that: \"sentry:location:{my_pass}\". And {my_pass} has to be defined on target fr via config files for example. kelvan wrote: (2009-01-08 17:53:58)
Maybe a phonenumber whitelist would be good.
Or better a combination with password, so you can add the number of your girlfriend there ;) I don't know if this is already possible, but what about define custom commands. sentry:getlastcalled or sentry:selfdestruction ;) Angus wrote: (2009-01-08 18:00:53)
Some kind of authentication is next on the todo list.
I was also thinking of other commands reboot, powerdown, set_profile_stolen. Yorick wrote: (2009-03-01 16:33:31)

sms-sentry should be in the shr-unstable feed so there\\\'s no need to download it from here.

A quick hack to add password authentication is a small edit to edit /usr/bin/sms-sentry .
Change the line (line 97 here): if contents.endswith( \\\"location\\\" ) : to read something like: if contents.endswith( \\\"location:mypassword\\\" ) : This did the trick for me. (remember your password! :) vendion wrote: (2009-07-15 04:43:58)
Does it need to be sent with the "" or without? I tried sending a text without the quotes and never got a text back with the location, using SHR Unstable.

I tested this app and in the beginning I didn't receive any feedback. When I started navit later on, I received the sms on the other phone. May it be the case that the phone suspends before a good position is obtained? (If yes maybe fsoraw together with some sleep can help here)
2nd comment. When I sent the magic sms to the freerunner, it was indicated like any other sms - which may be not desired if your neo was stolen - so is there a way for silent/hidden sms reception? 3rd comment: a feature like sentry:make_noise (even if profile is set to silent mode) would be usefull if gps is not accurate to locate your neo e.g. within your house or in the gras ... Nevertheless, nice app. Thanks for sharing it! BiggMatt wrote: (2009-10-22 01:36:21)

sms-sentry seems to need gps to be not running to work. and only one sms:sentry seems to leave the gps antennae on so that it cannot power on the gps antennae to get a fix. maybe it can power off the antennae before trying to power it on, or it can get coordinates from the antennae while something else (navit, tangogps) is using it.
It is a great idea for a program, and the password option is simple. A routine to check who is calling and optionally spoof the location would be cool too. also, sentry:stolen would probably be very wise. I like your program. grzbiet wrote: (2009-12-10 23:27:18)
and just another idea:
if the simcard is replaced (and the number is not on white list), send sms to preset number. and about the sentry:stolen option: what would be better: make thief give your moko true viking's funeral or make moko give you thief whereabouts so the police can handle rest? The hosting does not work - account suspended

It is a nice thing though it maybe tiresome in case you do not want others know where you are. In fact, it is very interesting how the GP system works. I've seen an interesting video about it. Found it at rapidshare SE http://rapidpedia.com . It is great that the accuracy is very high. It is approximately 10 m.
